Niels Klein Saxophone, Clarinets, Composition
Niels Klein (*1978 in Hamburg, Germany) studied Saxophone, Clarinet and Composition at the Hochschule für Musik u. Tanz Köln. Since then he played and recorded with musicians as Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Bob Brookmeyer, Albert Mangesldorff and many others and played on many festivals as Jazzfest Berlin, Jazzbaltica Salzau, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Moers Festival etc.
He can be heard as a Saxophonist and Clarinetist on almost 50 recordings, he released 9 Albums so far as a leader or co-leader (Trio, Quartet, Tentett, BigBand). Recent projects are his Band "Tubes & Wires" whose second album "Life In Times Of The Big Crunch" will be released in April 2017. In November 2016 he released the album of his orchestral avantgarde cool jazz project "LOOM".
As a composer, arranger and conductor he worked with countless Big Bands like the NDR BigBand, WDR BigBand, European Jazz Orchestra, Bundesjazzorchester, BJO, EOS Kammerorchester Köln, Metropole Orchestra. He recently recorded a Big Band Programm with the NDR Big Band feat. Jim Black which will be released on CD in 2018.
Since 2011 he shres the Artistic Direction of the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany with Jiggs Whigham. From 2009 to 2016 was Professor for Composition at the Conservatory of Osnabrück. Since 2016 he is head of the saxophone department at the Hochschule für Musik u. Tanz Köln, one of the biggest and most reknown Jazz-Programms in Germany.
He received numerous awards like ECHO Jazz 2015, WDR Jazz Award 2011, European Composers Award of Berlin 2009, Jazzprice Köln 2005 und des NRW Young Artists Award 2004.
From 2001 to 2009 he was member of the studioband of the major televsion show "TVTotal". During over 1500 episodes of this show he performed with many international artists like Lionel Ritchie, Busta Rhymes, Adele, Backstreet Bioys, Jason Mraz and many others.
He is founding member of the KLAENG Jazzcollectiv Cologne, which organises Festivals, Workshops and concert series since 2010 to enrichen the Jazzlife in his hometown Cologne. From 2006 to 2014 is was co-curator of the concert series Jazz-O-Rama.
